Goss v. Eagle Traffic Control, Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas, 1996. Roadway construction accident on the Pa. Turnpike resulting in the death of a 34 year old bridge painter, Jim Goss, and multiple orthopedic injuries which disabled his co-worker, Sam Cambouris. The jury awarded a total of Six Million Dollars ($6,000,000), $3.3 Million for the death claim and $2.7 Million for the total disability claim.
Siani v. Denofa, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Five Million Seven Hundred Thousand Dollar ($5,700,000) verdict in favor of the Estate of a 22 year old woman murdered in Bristol, Pa. by a patron of a club where she worked as a dancer.
Auto Fatality, Delaware County Court of Common Pleas. Death of an 81 year old male driver hit head-on by turning trolley, including underinsured motorist claim and negligent highway design claim. Total of One Million Two Hundred Ninety Six Dollars ($1,296,000).
Medical Malpractice, Outlying Rural Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas. Death of an elderly woman after abdominal surgery due to untreated post-operative infection. Eight Hundred Twenty Five Thousand Dollars ($825,000).
Obstetric Malpractice, Suburban Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Death of in utero twin – failure to prevent miscarriage after premature rupture of membranes. Six Hundred Thousand Dollars ($600,000).
Prison Suicide, United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Suicide of 18 year old inmate, civil rights claim, and malpractice claim. Five Hundred Sixty Thousand Dollars ($560,000).
Prisoner Civil Rights Failure to Provide Medical Care, Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas. Failure to provide prompt medical treatment for ruptured appendix to a 40 year old inmate after a fight and death by peritonitis. Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($500,000).
Duffy Truck Litigation, United States District Court for Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Verdict in favor of a 25 year old male car passenger who sustained a subdural hematoma after being hit by a tractor trailer. After surgery and intensive rehabilitation, he returned to work, but there remained mild neurologic residuals. Two Million Seven Hundred Thousand Dollars ($2,700,000).
High Forceps Obstetric Malpractice, Suburban Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Baby suffered fractured skull and brain injury during forceps delivery, with minor neurologic residuals. Two Million Dollars ($2,000,000).
Keifer v. Reinhart Food Services and Werner Enterprises, United States District Court Western District of Pennsylvania, October of 2012. One Million Two Hundred Thousand Dollars ($1,200,000). Federal jury verdict in Pittsburgh, in favor of a 60 year old interstate truck driver who sustained a subdural hematoma and fractured leg, both of which required surgery, after which he returned to work within several months.
Foote v. Long, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Eight Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollar verdict ($850,000) in favor of middle aged woman who suffered a moderate concussion with no wage loss and minimal medical treatment after a car accident.
Wilson v. Scotchbrook Townhouses, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, May of 2013. 59 year old carpet installer suffered lumbar herniated disc after his leg broke through the floor of defendant’s residential apartment complex. He underwent three surgeries: lumbar discectomy with recurrent herniation, failed spinal fusion, and anterior-posterior two level instrumented fusion with artificial spacer discs. Jury verdict --Eight Million Nine Hundred Thousand Dollars ($8,900,000).
Dinnien v. Thomas, Montgomery County Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas, 2009. Judgment entered in favor of driver who sustained a broken leg, ankle, and knee, requiring multiple surgeries. Plaintiff nevertheless returned to work after several months of therapy. Two Million Two Hundred Twenty Five Thousand Dollars ($2,225,000).

Multiple Spinal Fusion Surgeries, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. 36 year old woman with no wage loss who required two neck surgeries after a car accident, including an anterior-posterior cage cervical fusion following a failed bone fusion. One Million Three Hundred Thousand Dollars ($1,300,000).
Host v. Media Quarry, Delaware County Court of Common Pleas, 2011. Cervical discectomy and arthroscopic shoulder surgery to 41 year old man injured after a tree fell on his truck. One Million Dollars ($1,000,000).
Fractured Hip, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. 52 year old male fractured hip in warehouse when struck by forklift on loading dock. Nine Hundred Thousand Dollars ($900,000).
Single Fusion Following Herniated Disc, Philadelphia Common Pleas. 32 year old truck driver sustained herniated disc when loading dock collapsed requiring instrumented fusion. Eight Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars ($850,000).
Cervical Herniation Surgery, Lehigh Valley Court of Common Pleas. 41 year old mechanic who suffered herniated discs in neck and back, requiring neck surgery. Auto liability and underinsured motorist claims, total recovery of Seven Hundred Seventy Five Thousand Dollars ($775,000).
Shoulder Surgery Rotator Cuff, Philadelphia Common Pleas. Shoulder injury and hernia to 54 year old union glacier sustained as a result of a fall at construction site. Seven Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars ($750,000).
Instrumented Fusion Herniated Disc, Delaware County Court of Common Pleas. 51 year old male who returned to work after lumbar discectomy and fusion. Liability and underinsured motorist recovery was Four Hundred Eighty Two Thousand Dollars ($482,000), not including bad faith claim.
Fractured Ribs, Fingers, and Hip Seroma, Philadelphia Common Pleas. 50 year old woman who was a pedestrian run over by the trailer of a turning truck, and who had permanent scarring from the seroma. Eight Hundred Fifty Five Thousand Dollars ($855,000).
Gardler v. School Claims Service, Delaware County Common Pleas and underinsured motorist claim, 2011. 53 year old female school bus driver injured her shoulder and herniated a disc in her back but refused surgery. Six Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars ($650,000), not including bad faith claim.
Unoperated Herniated Disc, 46 year old woman with a herniated disc from an automobile accident and serious pre-existing medical problems that made her a high surgical risk. Her injuries were aggravated after she was accidentally thrown out of her wheelchair while being pushed down steps. Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($500,000).
The ranges of these cases have varied dramatically on a case-by-case basis from several thousand dollars up to Ten Million Dollars ($10,000,000).
